Grow Book Club
The Grow Book Club is a unique youth and young adult book club committed to creating a close-knit community of young readers. The club is a haven for young people who share a passion for literature and a curiosity for the world around them. It also serves as a platform for authors to share their work and connect with the youth of the community in a unique way.
Currently, over 2.5 million children do not have libraries in their communities, and 2/3 of American children cannot read proficiently. This number is even higher in under-served communities of color.
Our club goes beyond traditional book club activities by incorporating interactive elements such as author Q&A sessions and community impact projects. These activities aim to deepen the connection between the youth and empower them to apply the lessons learned from the reading to their own lives.
New Campaign!
Grow Mentoring and Christopher Rivas (author, actor) are partnering on a literacy awareness and youth engagement campaign throughout Los Angeles to give away 1,000 copies of his book, Brown Enough, to reignite a love for reading among our youth.
Brown Enough
by Christopher Rivas
“I use storytelling to disrupt what is with the possibility of what can be! It’s not really about answers, it’s about asking bigger questions, like the vital role stories play in our lives and work.”
At a time when disinformation, hate crimes, inequality, racial injustice, and white supremacy are on the rise, Brown Enough, part memoir and part social commentary, emerges, asking readers to proudly put their bodies, their identities, into the conversations of race.
Brown Enough is a roller coaster of finding one's true self while simultaneously having a racial awakening amidst the struggle to be "perfectly" Latinx, woke, and as Brown as possible to make it in today's America.
We are excited to have our first book club partnership with Christopher and plan to create a new generation of readers and leaders among the youth we work with!
